African American Doctor Depicted as Gorilla at UCLA Event
“Imagine being graphically depicted as a gorilla in a slideshow photo. That alone is offensive. But the fact that the slide was publicly presented for laughs during an annual medical school sponsored event attended by more than 200 physicians, faculty, residents and guests is both shocking and indefensible.
Not only was Dr. Christian Head’s face superimposed onto the body of a gorilla standing on all-fours, but the photo also depicted him being sodomized by his Caucasian supervisor. This, unfortunately, was just one of a series of racially motivated incidents that Dr. Head has had to deal with over the past several years at UCLA. His complaints to administrative leaders at the Medical Center, the University and UC Regents have gone unanswered. In fact, his complaints have spurred additional acts of humiliation, attempts to push him out of academic medicine and retaliation.”

Here I was, thinking that I was treated like shit by the white women and whiteness-supporting WoC on my job because I wasn’t “educated” enough. I don’t have a bunch of degrees, so I’m fair game, right?
And then I see this. I guess it doesn’t matter WHAT we do to prove ourselves “worthy”. They’ll still treat us like dirt. Look at what this highly-educated man had to endure. He’s a surgeon for God’s sake.
Man…I quit.
Let me tell you something. The more educated you are as a person of color, the more likely you are to be a target of this kind of fuckassery.
1. Presumably, to attain that level of education, you’ve “assimilated” a bit and those jokes, while tasteless, you should “be able to take a joke.” And the problem is that most of us, if we want to get ahead, will swallow the offense and laugh good-naturedly… then try and forget about it or go be mad in our safe space… other people of color
2. As we rise, we are subtly indoctrinated with the fact that if we want to get ahead, he need to be the least threatening kind of PoC. Meaning avoiding the angry black man/woman stereotype at all costs and disparaging other PoC who refuse to stand for this bullshit. Never mind the fact that being a highly educated person of color is inherently threatening. We’re still pretty new to this club.
